๐ข Ontario Fire Code Requirements for Businesses
Under the Ontario Fire Code, all commercial buildings must comply with specific fire extinguisher requirements to ensure workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
Legal Requirement: The Ontario Building Code Section 3.2.5.17 mandates that portable fire extinguishers must be installed in all buildings (except dwelling units) in conformance with Part 6 of Division B of the Fire Code under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997.
๐ Location Requirements
Fire extinguishers must be located in or adjacent to corridors or aisles that provide access to exits. Signs or markings must prominently indicate locations in large floor areas.
๐ Height Specifications
Extinguishers under 40 pounds: Maximum 5 feet above floor to top of unit. Extinguishers over 40 pounds: Maximum 3.5 feet above floor to top of unit.

Regular inspection and testing of fire extinguishers is mandatory. Failure to comply with Ontario Fire Code requirements results in fines and penalties.
